Writing
In Writing Workshop, grade 2 will start a new unit in which they will learn about the different styles of poetry:  
  • Acrostic
  • Limerick
  • Haiku
They will investigate how poets see things with their hearts and minds, how they write about the world in fresh unusual ways, break up their lines, read the poem aloud after each try until the poem is written in a way that sounds just right.




Reading
In Reading Workshop, the week is dedicated to guided reading sessions in book clubs. We will be sending these books home for your child to read the assigned chapters. Make sure to ask them to retell the story to you after they read.

Math
In Math, students will be exploring fractions. They will learn to:
  • Use manipulatives to model different fractions, such as ½ , ¼ , ⅛ 
  • Divide shapes into equal parts.
  • Write fractions to name equal parts
STEM
In STEM, students will be assessed on the unit, ‘Pebbles, Sand and Silt’

Writing
In Writing Workshop, our opinion writers finalize a celebratory piece for their ‘Opinion Writing’ unit.

Reading
In Reading Workshop, the week is dedicated to guided reading sessions in book clubs.  

Math
In Math, grade 2 will be revising unit 7 of mathematics and will be taking a unit assessment. 

STEM
In STEM, students will plan and draw a neighborhood labeling the various materials used to build it e.g. cinder blocks, bricks, cement, gravel etc. 

Social Studies
In Social Studies, students will dig into personal knowledge of the Saudi culture and the information collected from Ms. Saurabh interview. They will compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the two countries.

February 16th to February 19th, 2020

This week in class...

Writing
In Writing Workshop, our opinion writers will be writing an ‘On-Demand’ piece to wrap up the unit.

Reading
In Reading Workshop, we are working on becoming more fluent readers. We are revising:
  • Rereading aloud and in our heads
  • Talking like characters
  • Making our voices match the mood
  • Reading with a 'just right' pace. 

Math
In Math, students will be measuring their arm span and jumps using the measuring tape and yard sticks. Students will revise the units of length i.e. inches, centimeters, and yards.

STEM
In STEM, our current unit is “Pebbles, Sand and Silt”, we will read about making things with rock. Students will draw and label things that one can build using different materials such as rocks, pebbles, gravel clay, bricks, asphalt (pebbles and gravel), cement/concrete (gravel and sand), mortar (cement and sand).

Social Studies
In Social Studies, students are working on finalizing a draft of the information they collected from the interviews. Both sections of Grade 2 will share the information with each other.

February 9th - February 13th, 2020

Writing
In Writing Workshop, our writers choose topics that they feel strongly about, making cases by supporting their opinion with reasons and details.   

Reading
In Reading Workshop, the coming two weeks are dedicated to guided reading sessions for our unit Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading. Our readers will practice the various strategies learned to become fluent readers.

Math
In Math, students will start Unit 7 of math and practice pattern in counting, doubles and halves.

STEM
In STEM, our current unit is “Pebbles, Sand and Silt”, we will do activities about the story of sand.

Social Studies
In Social Studies, Grade 2 is learning about the expectations of how to act in one’s own culture and compare this with behavioral expectations of other cultures. This week, Grade 2B will interview Ms. Kelly, our assistant principal, and they will get to learn about her country ‘United States of America’. Next week the students will prepare a presentation on their acquired knowledge of the USA and present to Grade 2A.

Reminders
Thursday, February 13th 2020: 100 Day Celebration! Omg, can’t believe it is already been 100 days in school this year! Elementary student creativity will shine, as they carry or wear 
self-made projects which represent the number 100. Mothers (or female family members) will be welcome to attend the Elementary parade from 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm. Dismissal will be immediately afterwards. 
Looking forward to seeing lots of interesting, creative ideas on Thursday!
